Christmas Menu 2018

Every year by the time December rolls around I'm craving simplicity and ease.

This year that's more important than ever as we just added a brand new puppy to our already loud and crazy household. This is Murphy the groodle. Isn't she a sweetheart?!

With a puppy, we're staying close to home these holidays so we're hosting both Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas lunch at our place.

I have no problem with that.

I hate travelling at Christmas!

I've been DIYing a lot this year and have prepared gift hampers and Christmas cakes for family.

Our hampers included essential oil infused salt and sugar, homemade hand scrub and lip balm, mini Christmas cakes and salt dough ornaments made and decorated by the kids.

I actually did a 12 days of DIY Christmas event over on Facebook earlier this month and you'll find all 12 days under the video section there. Just look for all the videos with me in a Santa hat! Haha.

There will be just 8 of us Christmas Eve and 6 of us on Christmas Day so our menu is simple and easy and allows for lots of leftovers.

The leftovers are the best bit don't you think?

Christmas Eve

Slow-cooked beef brisket with thyme and mustard sauce

Hasselback potatoes
Green veg with almonds
GF DF steamed orange and ginger pudding with coconut custard

Christmas Breakfast

Paleo cinnamon donuts
Fruit platter

Christmas Lunch

Lychee, lime and ginger fizz cocktail

Prawns
Ham
Waldorf salad
Peach, nectarine and quinoa salad

Trifle (gluten and dairy free sponge, coconut milk custard, homemade raspberry and orange jelly, sliced fresh peaches with raspberries and whipped coconut cream)

I wish you and your family a wonderful and relaxing Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!

Christmas Menu 2017

I promised myself a stress-free Christmas and somehow it has worked out!

We have a very small family and aren’t hosting this year so I haven’t got to do much at all which is wonderful!

I had 2 traditional Christmas cakes soaked, baked and sent off to family by the middle of December.

There will be just 8 of us at my aunt’s place on Christmas Eve and I am bringing a frozen Christmas pudding with raspberry sauce for dessert.

Then there will be just 6 of us for Christmas Day at my mother in law’s place. I am taking a gorgeous peach and raspberry trifle and making the mayonnaise and sauces. Too easy!

Christmas Eve

Cold meats and salads
Frozen Christmas Pudding (dairy-free)

Christmas Breakfast

Grain-free pancakes with blueberry sauce (Quirky Cooking)
Scrambled eggs

Christmas Lunch

Prawns
Turkey
Ham
Roast potatoes
Waldorf salad
Peach, nectarine and quinoa salad

Trifle (gluten and dairy free sponge, coconut milk custard, homemade raspberry and orange jelly, sliced fresh peaches with blueberries and raspberries)

I wish you and your family a wonderful and relaxing Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!

Christmas Menu 2016

Christmas menu 2016 - www.mywholefoodfamily.com

Well, we're really on the countdown to Christmas now!

This year I have made a concerted effort to get organised early for Christmas.

We bought a few presents during the year and then I made sure I had all the kids presents bought and wrapped before school finished. Go me!

I've had lists upon lists of gifts, shopping and food prepared so that this week has just been crossing things off. I've even got a timeline prepared for all the Christmas Eve cooking to make sure everything gets done.

This year we are hosting both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Normally we wouldn't do both but that's just how it's worked out.

This is the 4th year now that I've posted our Christmas menu and it's so helpful to be able to look back at previous years and see what worked and what didn't, and importantly what we can cut back on.

Our Christmas food this year is quite traditional - all our favourite things, homemade of course, and with lots leftover so I don't need to cook for a few days.

It's going to be great.

Christmas Eve Dinner

Honey, mustard and ginger glazed ham
Pigs in blankets (by special request from the kids who saw Jamie Oliver make some on one of his Christmas cooking shows)
Duck fat roast potatoes
Roast carrots
Steamed greens with almonds

Tapioca Christmas pudding (GF, DF)
Coconut vanilla bean custard

Christmas Breakfast

Scrambled eggs with leftover ham and garlic spinach
Spiced fig gingerbread

Christmas Lunch

Nibbles - nuts, pate, GF crackers, Christmas bliss balls

BBQ side of salmon
Prawn and chorizo salad
Mango and avocado salad

Mango and raspberry trifle (similar to this one I made last year but with a few changes to make it both GF and DF)

So that's it!

I wish all of you a very happy and safe Christmas 2016.

What's on your Christmas menu this year? Do you do a hot or cold Christmas lunch? Tell me below

Christmas Menu 2015

I'm a little later with my Christmas menu planning than I was intending but I've still made it with 4 days to spare!

We spent most of the day today celebrating an early Christmas with my dad's side of the family. As usual the food was spectacular - ham off the bone, maple glazed chicken, quiche and 8 different salads including my Rice Salad, and followed by cheesecake, a chocolate and raspberry ice cream pudding and a very boozy trifle. The kids were spoilt rotten and we also came home loaded with homemade Christmas cake, chutneys, shortbread and rum balls. Whew!

Yet again for the big day though we are going for low-stress and fuss-free so our menu is quite pared back. No roast turkey again this year just lots of seafood, salads and fruit. We are planning on doing a roast pork belly for Boxing Day.

We are going to my mother in law's house for Christmas Eve and then hosting at home for Christmas Day. I'm very excited to have our first Christmas in our new home, plus the boys have a BIG present coming to the backyard on Christmas Eve!!!

Christmas Eve

Nibbles
Cheese, crackers, nuts and truffles

Main
Barbecued chicken and witlof salad
Grilled prawn, chorizo and corn couscous salad
Sweet potato salad
Ham
Sourdough rolls

Dessert
Steamed orange pudding
Dairy-free Custard

Christmas Day

Breakfast
Gingerbread Loaf
Mango smoothies

Nibbles
Pate, crackers and nuts

Main
Seafood platter with tiger prawns, smoked salmon and condiments
Barbecued side of salmon
Ham
Crunchy duck fat roast potatoes
Avocado, mango and walnut salad
Coleslaw

Dessert
Dairy-free Mango and raspberry trifle

I still have a few more festive recipes to post over the coming days but now that the official Christmas menu is set I feel ready to go. I'm doing our final Christmas shopping kid-free first thing in the morning and then it should be smooth sailing!

How is your planning going? Any family favourites that you just couldn't have Christmas without?

Christmas Menu 2014

Writing this post has become an annual thing for me now and it's really helpful to have all my ideas in one place, and to be able to look back on what worked and what didn't for the following year.

This year we are hosting dinner on Christmas Eve and then heading down to my mother-in-law's place for lunch on Christmas Day.

For the first time we are doing a predominantly cold Christmas lunch. It makes a lot of sense given the climate here and I love seafood, but I will miss the roast turkey (and all the leftovers that go along with it). I'm already thinking though that we will buy a turkey after Chistmas when everything is on sale and do a roast for New Years Day instead.

Christmas Eve

Nibbles
Crackers, fruit, cheese, pate and chocolates

Main
Slow cooked lamb shanks with rosemary and redcurrants
Roast vegetable mash
Steamed seasonal greens

Dessert
Christmas Pudding
Dairy free custard

Christmas Day

Breakfast
Coconut and mango parfaits

Entree
Seafood platter with smoked salmon, tiger prawns and accompaniments

Main
Lemon myrtle chicken
Roast potatoes
Barbecued side of salmon
Quinoa salad
Beans with cherry vinagrette

Dessert
Lemon curd and raspberry jelly trifle
Fruit salad

This is my last post for 2014. I am going to unplug and have as little screen time as possible for the next few weeks (although I still have lots of study to cram in!).

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday. See you in 2015! xx

Christmas Rice Salad

Christmas Rice Salad - www.mywholefoodfamily.com

I know I said I wasn't going to post any of my Christmas recipes but I made an exception for this salad. Because it is exceptional!

The original version was supposed to be made with quinoa rather than rice. We had the quinoa cooked on Christmas day but with all the other food we had, we totally forgot about it sitting there in the pot and ended up having to throw it away.

So a couple of days after Christmas I decided to make it with rice and use up all the yummy herbs etc that I had bought specially for it. While the nuts and cranberries do make it very festive and therefore perfect for Christmas, I guarantee it will be welcome at any BBQ anytime!

Christmas Rice Salad
Recipe by me

4 cups cooked brown rice
1 red capsicum, diced
1 green capsicum, diced
3 shallots/spring onions, finely sliced
100g cashews, roughly chopped
100g dried cranberries, roughly chopped
1 bunch mint, chopped finely
1 bunch parsley, chopped finely
zest and juice of 1 lemon
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tbs soy sauce

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Serve warm or cold. Especially good served with leftover ham or roast turkey. Serves 8-10 as a side dish.

Christmas Day Recap

Well another Christmas over. It seems like the build-up to Christmas is getting longer but then the actual day is over so quickly!

We had a really lovely day at home. We all slept in until 7 (amazing) and then came downstairs together for the kids to find their stockings full of lovely things. My dad arrived before the kids were up which meant he got to see them open their presents and have breakfast with us.

Here is my favourite pic of my 2 big boys with Oscar's new bike:

We took our tree down yesterday but still have presents in boxes and a fridge full of leftovers. Speaking of which we had way too much food. My 'simple' menu could have fed 20 people as it turned out, instead of just the 4 adults and 2 kids that we actually had. Oops.

Here's what I loved about our Christmas meal:

- mango smoothies for breakfast (a real hit with the kids and filled them up for the morning)

- prawn and avocado salad (loads of fresh king prawns, diced avocado, crisp iceberg lettuce and a homemade seafood sauce. Just delicious)

- roast turkey on the BBQ (a fresh turkey with a herb butter under the skin and wrapped in bacon. Cooked and then rested for 2 whole hours it was the moistest, most flavourful turkey we have ever done. Just make sure you have enough gas. We ran out half way through and hubby had to dash to the service station to buy a new bottle!)

- frozen christmas pudding for dessert (cool and refreshing but still with all the flavours of Christmas)

I didn't really get any good photos of our food so I won't post any of the recipes.  Some of them will definitely be made again next year so I will be sure to post then.

Also speaking of food, there were hot cross buns in Woolies this morning! Craziness!

So that's Christmas 2012. Full of family, food and lots of fun. Just as it should be :)

Christmas Menu 2012

Source
I though today I would share our Christmas menu seeing as we are now only hours from the big day!

We are having Christmas at home for the first time since having the boys and it is going to be wonderful for all of us not having to pack up and leave for the day. Much less disruptive for the kids. We will have my dad and N's mum with us so it will be a lovely family day.

As there will only be 6 of us I have kept the menu pretty simple. I will post recipes and photos after Christmas but I have my fingers crossed all will go smoothly tomorrow and everything will taste as good as I hope!

Breakfast
Mango smoothies
Cinnamon toast

Nibbles
Roasted Pumpkin Hummus
Pistachio Cheese Log
Assorted nuts, crackers and cheeses

Entree
Prawn cocktail (very retro but so yum!)
Salad

Main
Roast turkey (on the weber)
Ham on the bone
Pork and sage stuffing muffins
Gravy (Jamie Oliver recipe)
Christmas tabouli with quinoa
Warm potato and macadamia nut salad
Broccolini with almonds

Dessert
Pavlova with berries and cream
Frozen Christmas pudding

We have chosen to decorate with lots of purple this year, both on the tree and for the table. I love the photo above but I can guarantee our table will not be so elegant!

I wish you all have a very happy and safe Christmas! xx
